Police respond to report of armed person near Newport News elementary school

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – A brief lockdown at McIntosh Elementary School ended safely Tuesday afternoon after Newport News Police found no evidence of an armed person in the area.

Officers were called to the school around 2:15 p.m. after reports of a potentially armed individual nearby.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown as officers conducted a detailed search of the property and the wooded area behind the campus.

No suspect or weapon found

After a full sweep, police determined there was no threat to students or staff. No one matching the reported description was located, and no weapon was found.

Authorities said officers will remain at the scene until all students and teachers have safely left for the day.
