Powerball frenzy hits Virginia with $1M winner in Annandale

Annandale store sells $1 million Powerball ticket as jackpot hits $1.1 billion

RICHMOND, VA — A Virginia Lottery player is waking up $1 million richer after purchasing a winning Powerball ticket in Annandale for Saturday night’s drawing — just as excitement mounts across the state for tonight’s massive $1.1 billion jackpot.

The ticket, sold at Express Food Mart at 4713 Backlick Road, matched the first five white ball numbers but missed the red Powerball number. Still, the ticket is worth $1 million, and it was one of more than 81,000 winning Powerball tickets sold in Virginia for the December 13 drawing.

Powerball fever is sweeping the Commonwealth ahead of tonight’s drawing, which offers the second-largest jackpot of the year. The winner — if there is one — will have the option of taking the full $1.1 billion as an annuity paid over 30 years or opting for a one-time cash payment of approximately $503.4 million before taxes.

Tickets can be purchased at any of Virginia’s 5,300 licensed retailers or online through the Virginia Lottery app.

All profits from ticket sales go directly to public education. In Fiscal Year 2025, the Virginia Lottery raised over $901 million for K-12 schools, accounting for roughly 10% of the state’s overall education budget.

Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m., with prizes ranging from $2 up to the jackpot. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 292 million, while the odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.
