Middle River man who rarely plays lottery hits $50K Powerball prize

MIDDLE RIVER, MD – A Baltimore County man who almost never plays the lottery is now $50,000 richer after buying into the record-breaking $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot.

The Middle River resident claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on September 5, saying he was lured into playing by the unusually massive jackpot. He spent $100 on tickets at the Royal Farms store at 406 Bowley’s Quarters Road.

The day after the drawing, while speaking with his mother, she read him the winning numbers. To his surprise, one of his tickets matched all but one number, securing him a third-tier prize.

Uncertain of the win, he first had the ticket scanned at a friend’s bar that doubles as a lottery retailer. When the scanner confirmed the $50,000 payout, he checked again using the Maryland Lottery app to be sure.

“I was alone, so I ran around celebrating like a kid with a sugar rush,” he said, recalling the moment he realized his good fortune.

Though happy with his win, he admitted the result was bittersweet knowing he missed the jackpot by a single number. “I immediately went out and bought more tickets,” he said, adding that it was fun to dream about life-changing money.
