A motor vehicle crash brought down a utility pole and power lines overnight, forcing the closure of Route 9 in both directions through the Edgewood section of Middle Township.

Middle Township, NJ – A section of U.S. Route 9 remained closed Tuesday morning after an overnight crash brought down a utility pole and left electrical wires across the roadway in Middle Township.

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, all lanes of Route 9 were closed in both directions south of Main Street as of 9:32 a.m. because of the downed pole.

Police urge drivers to avoid the area

The Middle Township Police Department said the closure extended between East Main Avenue and Bayview Road in the Edgewood section of the township.

“Due to a motor vehicle accident and electrical wires in the roadway, Route 9 S is shut down in both directions between East Main Avenue and Bayview Road, located in the Edgewood section of Middle Township,” the department said in a Facebook post. “Please avoid the area if possible.”

Crews work to restore roadway

Utility crews and emergency responders remained at the scene Tuesday morning removing the damaged pole and repairing electrical lines.

Authorities had not released information about what caused the crash or whether anyone was injured. The roadway was expected to remain closed until the damaged utility infrastructure could be safely repaired and removed.
