NEWARK, NJ – Beginning January 1, riders using NJ Transit’s Reduced Fare Program will need a photo identification card to qualify for discounted tickets, marking the end of the agency’s long-standing acceptance of non-photo cards.
The change affects seniors, people with disabilities, and active military members who use the reduced fare option on buses, trains, and light rail.
NJ Transit said all non-photo Reduced Fare IDs will become invalid after the new year. Riders must apply for the new, free photo ID card online, by mail, or in person, providing proof of age or disability along with a recent photo.
Applications can be submitted through the agency’s website, mailed to the NJ Transit Reduced Fare Program, or processed at participating banks, savings and loans, or county offices on aging.
For students, a separate NJ Transit Student ID issued through their school will continue to be required to receive discounted fares. Regular riders can use standard fare payment methods, including the FARE-PAY card, ticket vending machines, or station ticket offices.
Accepted forms of identification for eligibility include a driver’s license, passport, Medicare card for seniors, or the new NJ Transit photo Reduced Fare ID.
