Stuffing and $50K lottery surprise in Annapolis

Trip for stuffing ends with a $50K Powerball jackpot at Annapolis Safeway

Annapolis, MD — A routine trip for Thanksgiving dinner prep turned into a life-changing moment for one Anne Arundel County woman, who picked up a Powerball ticket as a last-minute add-on — and ended up $50,000 richer the next day.

The Annapolis event planner said she wasn’t planning on playing the Lottery when she visited the Safeway on Forest Drive just before Thanksgiving. Her focus was on gathering ingredients for her holiday meal. But as she finished shopping, she passed the lottery counter and made a spontaneous decision to buy a Powerball ticket using her usual numbers — a mix of personal favorites and family birthdays.

That ticket, purchased on Wednesday, Nov. 19 — the same night as the Powerball drawing — turned out to match enough numbers to bring in a $50,000 prize. She didn’t discover the win until lunchtime the next day, when she checked her ticket using the Maryland Lottery app.

Still in disbelief after several rechecks, she eventually accepted that her biggest win to date — previously just $500 — had jumped to five figures.

The winning ticket was sold at the Safeway located at 1781 Forest Drive. The winner claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore and plans to save the entire amount.
