Toms River man charged after electric scooter rider dragged in DUI crash
BRICK TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Toms River man is facing multiple charges after police say he crashed a pickup truck into an electric scooter, seriously injuring its rider, while driving with a suspended license and appearing to be under the influence.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Thursday that 30-year-old Lloyd Ferrara was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license while involved in a crash resulting in serious bodily injury. The charges stem from a collision that occurred Wednesday night in Brick Township.
The crash took place around 10:15 p.m. on January 15 in the area of Route 88 and Jack Martin Boulevard. Investigators say Ferrara was driving a 1988 Ford pickup truck westbound on Route 88 when he attempted to make a right turn into a convenience store parking lot. In doing so, he reportedly failed to yield to an eastbound electric scooter, resulting in a head-on collision.
According to authorities, the 40-year-old male scooter rider was thrown from the vehicle and dragged a short distance underneath the pickup. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he remains in serious but stable condition.
Further investigation determined that Ferrara was driving on a suspended license at the time of the crash, and the pickup truck had fictitious license plates, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Officers at the scene reported that Ferrara appeared intoxicated. Standard field sobriety tests were administered, but Ferrara was reportedly unable to complete them successfully and was taken into custody for suspected driving under the influence. A blood draw was later conducted at Ocean University Medical Center under a court-authorized warrant. The results of that test are pending.
Ferrara was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he is currently being held pending a detention hearing.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing. Additional charges may follow, depending on the outcome of toxicology reports.
