Teen parole check in Utica leads to gun arrest and theft charges
Utica, NY – What began as a routine parole compliance visit quickly escalated when investigators uncovered a handgun inside a city residence, leading to the arrest of an 18-year-old already wanted in a separate domestic-related case.
Utica Police said investigators assigned to the GIVE Unit were assisting New York State Parole Officers on February 5 during a check on an individual under parole supervision. During the visit, parole personnel located a 9mm handgun inside the residence, prompting officers to secure the weapon and take the suspect into custody.
The individual was identified as Zaire Jones, 18, of Utica. Police said Jones was transported to the Utica Police Department for processing following the discovery of the firearm.
Investigators also determined Jones was wanted in connection with a separate domestic-related incident involving the theft of property from a victim. As a result, Jones was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and petit larceny.
Police said the investigation remains active and additional charges are possible as the case continues to develop.
