Teenagers arrested after attempted moped theft in Mattapan

Mattapan, MA – Officers were on patrol near Washington Street and Brent Street at approximately 9:13 PM on Monday in response to community concerns regarding the reckless operation of off-highway vehicles.

While on patrol, they observed a group of juveniles gathered in a parking lot at 637 Washington Street. The group was seen surrounding a red moped and tampering with the steering column in an apparent attempt to steal it.

When approached by officers, the suspects fled on foot. After a brief chase, five individuals were detained.

The owner of the moped approached officers during the investigation and reported that the same group had tried to rob her earlier on Talbot Avenue. Officers noted visible damage to the moped, including a cracked front cover and a broken steering column.

Five juveniles, aged fourteen to seventeen, were placed under arrest. They are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of unarmed robbery and malicious destruction of property under $1,200.
