FORT LAUDERDALE – It was like one of the most famous episodes of Gilligan’s Island where a sea mine washed up on the beach. Except, this time it was real.
A U.S. Navy sea mine washed up Sunday morning on the beach in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. The mine was found by a Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deputy during an early morning patrol. The deputy discovered the mine around 2:30 a.m. Easter morning. The mine had the word “Inert” written on it.
“BSO deputies secured the area around the item and closed off a small section of the beach,” the department said as a bomb squad was called in to inspect the device as a safety precaution.
In the Gilligan’s Island episode, “Mine Hero”, a classic which first aired in 1965, Gilligan finds an old World War II mine washed ashore on their island as the castaways try to figure out how to get rid of it.
