Traffic safety in Jackson and Lakewood at top of Ocean County commissioner’s list

TOMS RIVER, NJ – The Ocean County Board of Commissioners has approved a series of traffic safety improvements aimed at reducing congestion and improving roadway safety across several municipalities, including Lakewood, Berkeley, and Jackson Townships.

The measures include new traffic signal installations, upgrades to existing intersections, and formal agreements between the county, state, and local entities for long-term maintenance and operation.

In Lakewood Township, commissioners authorized an agreement with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), the Township of Lakewood, and Andrews Corner Owner LLC to install and maintain a new signal at Route 70 Ramp J and Chestnut Street (County Road 40). The intersection upgrade will include pedestrian push buttons, vehicle detection systems, and enhanced lighting to improve both motorist and pedestrian safety.

New and upgraded intersections

A second project in Berkeley Township will bring a new signalized intersection to County Road 21 (Ocean Gate Drive), County Road 2 (Mill Creek Road), and County Road 4 (Veeder Lane). The installation, designated as BRKLY-20, is part of an ongoing effort to modernize key intersections and improve traffic flow in high-volume corridors.

In Jackson Township, commissioners approved a signal revision project at County Road 12 (South New Prospect Road) and Woodlane Road. The update, labeled JK-12, will adjust signal timing and improve visibility at a busy commuter route serving residential and commercial areas.

Key points:
• New traffic signal to be installed at Route 70 and Chestnut Street in Lakewood
• Additional signal installation approved for Ocean Gate Drive and Mill Creek Road in Berkeley Township
• Jackson Township to receive updated signal timing and visibility improvements on South New Prospect Road

County officials said the projects align with Ocean County’s long-term roadway safety plan, designed to enhance pedestrian access, reduce accident risk, and coordinate infrastructure responsibilities between local and state agencies.
