UTICA, N.Y. – A 33-year-old man is facing felony charges after police say he struck a woman multiple times with his vehicle during an early morning argument on the 1000 block of West Street.

Officers and firefighters responded around 2:10 a.m. Friday and found the female victim seriously injured after being hit and pinned beneath a car. Witnesses told investigators the driver, identified as Derrell Henderson of Utica, initially struck the woman, then drove over her again before fleeing the scene.

A “be on the lookout” alert was issued, and patrol units soon located the vehicle a few blocks away, occupied by Henderson and another passenger. Both were detained for questioning. The victim was taken by Utica Fire Department medics to Wynn Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Following an investigation by the department’s Criminal Investigations Division, Henderson was charged with attempted assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, and multiple New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

Police say the swift response of patrol officers helped bring the violent confrontation to an end within minutes.
