STAMFORD, CT – A 73-year-old man was left with life-threatening injuries early Sunday after police say he was struck by a van that fled the scene on Washington Boulevard.

The crash occurred around 2:39 a.m. near 1201 Washington Blvd. as the man was crossing from the east side of the street to the west.

Investigators said the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by a southbound 2021 Chevy Express van that failed to stop.

Van located shortly after crash

Police said traffic cameras captured the van fleeing, allowing officers to quickly issue a citywide alert. The vehicle was located soon after in a nearby parking lot by Patrol Sgt. Jason Deems, who identified both the van’s owner and his residence.

Authorities said the driver, identified as Jean Vieux, 24, of Stamford, admitted to operating the van at the time and acknowledged hitting “something” before leaving the area.

Suspect charged with evading responsibility

Vieux was taken into custody and charged with evading responsibility. He is being held on bond as the Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad continues to review evidence.

Investigators said additional charges may be filed pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

The injured pedestrian remains hospitalized at Stamford Hospital with severe injuries.
