VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A convicted felon was arrested after attempting to evade a traffic safety checkpoint, leading police to discover ammunition and marijuana in his possession, the Virginia Beach Police Department announced Monday.

Earl Allen, 34, of Virginia Beach, was taken into custody on February 8, 2025, after making an illegal U-turn to avoid a checkpoint in the 4400 block of Bonney Road and fleeing from officers. Police canvassed the area and apprehended Allen after a brief pursuit.

Allen is charged with felony eluding, reckless driving, possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, obstruction of justice, expired registration, and illegal window tint.

The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit organized two checkpoints that night to deter impaired driving and check for compliance with licensing, registration, and inspections. The operation resulted in 31 summonses and two DUI arrests.

“I want to thank our Traffic Safety Unit and the other officers that assisted with these traffic safety checkpoints,” said VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate. “Targeted and aggressive traffic enforcement helps keep our roads safe for vehicles and pedestrians.”

Allen now faces multiple charges after police say he attempted to evade a routine checkpoint and was later found in possession of contraband.
