BURKE, VA – Nicholas Perez from Burke didn’t hit the $1 billion jackpot in the April 1 Powerball drawing, but he still walked away a millionaire. Perez won the second-tier prize of $1 million by matching the first five winning numbers of the Powerball.
He bought the lucky ticket at Safeway on 8646 Richmond Highway in Alexandria. His winning ticket was one of only six across the country to match the first five numbers and the only one in Virginia. The winning numbers for the draw were 19-24-40-42-56, with a Powerball number of 23. Perez used the Easy Pick option, allowing the computer to select his numbers randomly.
Retailers receive a bonus for selling high-tier winning tickets, and the Safeway that sold Perez’s ticket earned a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery. Mr. Perez, who is employed in the construction industry, has not yet planned how he will use his winnings.
Powerball draws occur at 10:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 25.
Proceeds from the Virginia Lottery go toward funding K-12 education in the state. Last fiscal year, Fairfax County, where Mr. Perez resides, benefited from over $48.5 million in Lottery funds. In Fiscal Year 2023, the Virginia Lottery contributed more than $867 million to K-12 education, accounting for about 10 percent of the state’s total K-12 school budget.
