Virginia fugitive wanted for brutal assault, abandoning infant in snow arrested in Florida

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. — A fugitive from Virginia accused of brutally attacking his child’s mother and abandoning a 13-day-old infant in the snow has been arrested in Florida, authorities said.

Darvin Flores Caballeros, 20, was taken into custody Thursday morning in Santa Rosa Beach after the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) received information that he had fled there from Fairfax County, Virginia.

Caballeros was wanted for a February 12 domestic assault in which police say he strangled the victim and dropped the infant during the altercation. He then fled on foot with the baby before officers arrived. A Good Samaritan later found the infant left in a pile of snow. The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Deputies arrested Caballeros around 11 a.m. after conducting a felony stop on a vehicle where he was a passenger. He was booked into the Walton County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Virginia.

Caballeros faces multiple charges, including malicious wounding, strangulation, child endangerment, assault and battery, and petit larceny.
