Virginia Beach man stuns family with $100K Powerball win he thought was pocket change
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Dennis Baker figured he had picked up a few hundred bucks when he checked his Powerball ticket — but a second look revealed he was sitting on a $100,000 payday just in time for the holidays.
Baker had matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball in the December 6 drawing. Normally, that would mean a $50,000 prize — but because he spent an extra dollar for the Power Play® option, his winnings were doubled to $100,000.
Still unsure of the exact prize amount, Baker initially brought the ticket to a store, where he was told it was worth more than $600. That’s when he asked his son to take a look. His son delivered the news: the win was $100,000.
Baker purchased the lucky ticket at Sky Mart, located at 6016 Indian River Road in Virginia Beach. The winning numbers drawn that night were 13, 14, 26, 28, 44, and the Powerball number was 7.
The odds of matching all six numbers in Powerball to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25. Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
All profits from the Virginia Lottery go toward K-12 education. In the last fiscal year, Virginia Beach received over $40.7 million in lottery funds for its schools. Statewide, the lottery raised more than $901 million for education, representing about 10 percent of the state’s public school budget.
