WALL TOWNSHIP, NJ – A months-long investigation into a sweeping mail theft and check fraud scheme has led to charges against a Hackensack man accused of targeting Monmouth County businesses in a sophisticated financial crime operation.
The Wall Township Police Department announced that Johnnie Harris, 30, was charged following an intensive probe by the department’s Detective Bureau. Detectives allege Harris intercepted business checks sent through the mail and diverted them for fraudulent deposit.
The investigation, which began in August 2025, focused on reports from multiple business owners who noticed missing or altered checks. Detectives linked the incidents to a broader scheme involving stolen mail and counterfeit financial documents.
Multiple theft and fraud charges filed
Detective Zach Honecker charged Harris on a complaint warrant with six counts of third-degree theft, two counts of disorderly persons theft, four counts of third-degree bad checks, two counts of fourth-degree bad checks, and two counts of disorderly persons bad checks.
The Wall Township Police Department said the case underscores the importance of vigilance among local business owners, urging them to carefully monitor mailed payments and report any irregularities immediately.
Police emphasized that Harris, like all defendants, is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
