GAINESVILLE, FL – A 22-year-old convicted felon wanted in connection with a violent altercation and carjacking was taken into custody Sunday afternoon following a nearly 24-hour coordinated investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies first responded Saturday to the 2600 block of SW 75th Street after a panic alarm was triggered at a residence. Witnesses at the scene reported a physical altercation between a man and a woman, later identified as suspect Lorenzo Johnson and his victim, before the two fled in a black Kia. Deputies found blood and damaged property consistent with a violent disturbance.
As investigators gathered details, Gainesville Police received a report of a stolen vehicle at the Wawa on Archer Road involving the same individuals. By the time officers arrived, the vehicle had left the scene. Deputies later interviewed the victim, who described a harrowing sequence of events that began as a verbal dispute and escalated into physical violence. The victim told deputies Johnson struck and choked them, took their keys, and attempted to drive off in their car. The victim said they managed to escape twice—once at the gas station and again later after Johnson fled the vehicle—before safely returning home.
When initial search efforts failed to locate the suspect, deputies obtained a warrant for Johnson’s arrest on charges of battery by strangulation, felony battery with a prior conviction, and carjacking without a firearm or weapon.
The following day, patrol units using real-time intelligence located Johnson driving northbound on Interstate 75 near mile marker 384 in a white Toyota Camry. Deputies initiated a high-risk traffic stop, where Johnson complied with commands and was arrested without incident.
The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office credited the arrest to coordinated teamwork and persistence, noting that deputies worked continuously through the night to track the suspect’s movements and prevent further harm. “Through professionalism and dedication, our deputies ensured accountability and reinforced our commitment to public safety,” the agency said in a statement.
