SOMERVILLE, N.J. – The Somerset County Board of County Commissioners has awarded its first-ever Trails Grant to the Borough of Watchung to support the creation of a new ADA-accessible trail at Camp Endeavor, a project aimed at expanding recreational access and inclusion in the region.

The grant, presented Tuesday during the commissioners’ meeting, marks the debut of Somerset County’s new initiative to enhance community trail systems and improve accessibility across local parks. Officials said the funding will help Watchung address a long-standing recreation deficit by constructing a 1,500-foot trail designed for walkers and hikers of all abilities.

The new pathway will wind through Camp Endeavor, offering residents a safe and inclusive outdoor space that connects to the borough’s broader recreation plan. County leaders described the project as a model for how municipalities can use trail development to strengthen community wellness and accessibility.

“The Trails Grant is an important step toward ensuring all residents can enjoy Somerset County’s natural spaces,” commissioners said following the award.

Watchung officials expressed gratitude for the funding and emphasized that the project will not only enhance local recreation but also provide an equitable space for individuals with mobility challenges to experience the outdoors.

More information about Watchung’s trail enhancement plan is available through the borough’s official website at watchungnj.gov.
