Woman killed as SUV goes airborne and crashes on Delaware highway

MIDDLETOWN, DE – A woman was killed in a violent single-vehicle crash Monday evening after an SUV went airborne and rolled over on State Route 301.

The crash happened around 6:08 p.m. when a black 2018 Toyota Highlander traveling northbound on Route 301 veered into the grass median near the DE-71 overpass. The vehicle went up an embankment, became airborne, and landed in the right lane of DE-71, where it rolled over and struck a jersey barrier before coming to rest on the shoulder.

The rear passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld pending family notification. The driver, a 62-year-old man, and the front passenger, a 55-year-old woman, both from the Bronx, New York, were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The roadway remained closed for about six hours as investigators worked the scene.
