RAMSEY, NJ — The quiet of New Year’s weekend was shattered by a tragic event at Konica Minolta’s headquarters near Route 17, close to the Rockland County border. Crystal Camargo, 41, was found deceased in the cafeteria area of the company campus before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

She had been fatally shot in the head, according to sources with direct knowledge of the homicide.

Luis Suarez, also 41, has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose in connection with Camargo’s death. Suarez, a chef, reportedly had young children with Camargo. The Ramsey Police Department responded to the scene following a call from Montclair, indicating that Suarez had committed the murder and was contemplating suicide.

A large-scale police response ensued, with officers from surrounding towns, Bergen County sheriff’s deputies, and New Jersey State Police converging on the area. A perimeter was established, K9 units were deployed, and a manhunt for Suarez began. He was described as 5-foot-10 inches tall and weighing 265 pounds, and was last seen driving a red 2018 Nissan Altima.

The search came to an end when Suarez surrendered in Montclair, over 20 miles away from the scene, around 9 p.m. He was taken into custody by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and subsequently booked into the Bergen County Jail, where he remained held pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella confirmed the details of the shooting and the arrest on New Year’s Day. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, as it grapples with the tragic loss and the circumstances surrounding it.
