PHILADELPHIA, PA – A 35-year-old woman was critically wounded after police opened fire early Sunday morning in the city’s 25th District.
The shooting happened around 4:11 a.m. on the 9XX block of West Erie Avenue after officers responded to reports of a person armed with a gun.
When officers arrived, they found the woman holding a firearm to the right side of her head.
Police said officers gave multiple commands for her to drop the weapon, but she did not comply.
According to investigators, one officer deployed a Taser that struck the woman but failed to subdue her. She then ran across Erie Avenue and pointed her gun in the direction of officers, prompting two officers to discharge their duty weapons.
The woman was struck multiple times and fell to the ground, dropping her firearm. Officers rendered aid before transporting her to Temple University Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
A .22 caliber Kel-Tec handgun was recovered at the scene. Police said the weapon’s serial number had been obliterated and was loaded with one round in the chamber and nineteen rounds in the magazine.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the encounter.
The woman has been charged with aggravated assault on police and violations of the Uniform Firearms Act.
Officials confirmed that both officers involved—one a 36-year-old male with three years of service, the other a 25-year-old male with two years—were assigned to the 25th District and have been placed on administrative duty pending investigation.
Body-worn cameras were active throughout the incident. The shooting remains under review by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Unit, Internal Affairs Bureau, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.
