Ticket turns into 50000 dollar Pick 5 jackpot for Monroe County man
MALAGA, OH – A Monroe County man who thought he bought a Mega Millions ticket instead discovered he was holding a 50000 dollar Pick 5 winner after a routine scan at a local Walmart.
Ron of Malaga purchased what he believed was a Mega Millions ticket at Walmart Supercenter #2199, located at 50739 Valley Plaza Drive in St. Clairsville. He later learned the ticket was actually for the Ohio Lottery’s Pick 5 game.
When he scanned the ticket, he questioned the result and went to customer service for verification. A clerk confirmed the ticket was a Pick 5 entry and that it had matched all five numbers in the Feb. 5 evening drawing.
The winning numbers were 3-0-9-5-7. The odds of matching all five Pick 5 numbers in a straight bet are 1 in 100000.
Ron returned home and shared the news with his wife later that day. After federal and state taxes totaling 26.75 percent, he will receive 36625 dollars.
He said he plans to use part of the winnings to support his grandchildren and make a donation to his church.
Pick 5 drawings are held daily at 12:29 p.m. and 7:29 p.m. Saturday evening drawings air during the Cash Explosion television program from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Since 1974, the Ohio Lottery has contributed more than 34 billion dollars to education.
