Power Play doubles a third-prize ticket into a six-figure score
NEWBURGH, NY – A Powerball ticket bought at a Newburgh smoke shop turned into a $100,000 prize in Wednesday’s drawing, with the Power Play option doubling what otherwise would have been a $50,000 win.
The New York Lottery announced that Smokes 4 Less, located at 59 North Plank Road in Newburgh, sold the third-prize-winning Powerball ticket.
The ticket was among the winners from the Aug. 12 drawing, which produced the numbers 4, 26, 66, 67 and 69, with Powerball 9.
Power Play turns $50K into $100K
A standard third-tier Powerball prize is $50,000 for matching four of the five white balls plus the red Powerball.
The Newburgh ticket was purchased with Power Play. The multiplier for Wednesday’s drawing was 2X, boosting the prize to $100,000.
Power Play is an optional feature that can multiply eligible non-jackpot Powerball prizes.
Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Players select five numbers from a field of 1 through 69 and one Powerball number from a separate field of 1 through 26.
Newburgh store lands six-figure ticket
The New York Lottery identified Smokes 4 Less as the retailer that sold the $100,000 ticket.
The Lottery announcement did not provide information about the purchaser.
New York Lottery proceeds support public education across the state. The Lottery reported contributing $3.8 billion to New York public schools during fiscal year 2023-24.
