Police say Ahmad Mims was found shot on a sidewalk after the gunfire occurred inside a Rosedale Street residence

WASHINGTON, DC – A 12-year-old boy has been charged with voluntary manslaughter while armed in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Ahmad Mims, who police say was shot inside a Northeast DC home before being found dying on a sidewalk.

The Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest Wednesday, more than a month after the July 11 shooting.

At approximately 8:24 p.m. that night, Fifth District officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Rosedale Street NE following a report of a person down.

Officers arrived to find Ahmad on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound.

DC Fire and EMS responded, but the 13-year-old had no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say shooting happened inside home

Although Ahmad was discovered outside, detectives determined during their investigation that the shooting occurred inside a home in the 1600 block of Rosedale Street NE.

Police have not disclosed what investigators believe led to the shooting or provided details about the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.

MPD also did not disclose the relationship, if any, between the two children.

12-year-old arrested

On Wednesday, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested a 12-year-old boy from Northeast DC.

The arrest was made under a DC Superior Court pre-petition custody order, according to MPD.

The child was charged with voluntary manslaughter while armed.

Because the accused is a juvenile, police did not release his name.

The charge is an allegation and does not constitute a finding of guilt.
