Police say .40-caliber casings were recovered at both shooting scenes
UTICA, NY – Two bursts of gunfire less than two hours apart on Utica streets led investigators to a 15-year-old suspect, who police say was identified through surveillance footage and other evidence before being charged in connection with both incidents.
The shootings occurred Aug. 31 and were initially detected through ShotSpotter alerts, according to the Utica Police Department.
The first alert came at approximately 2 p.m. near Blandina Street and Kossuth Avenue.
A second shooting was reported at approximately 3:45 p.m. near Elizabeth Street and Kossuth Avenue.
Officers investigating both locations recovered spent .40-caliber shell casings, police said. Investigators were also provided with similar descriptions of a suspect in both incidents.
GIVE investigators reviewed surveillance footage and identified members of the groups involved, eventually developing a 15-year-old as a likely suspect, according to police.
The following day, Sept. 1, GIVE investigators and Utica Police patrol officers located the teenager and took him to the Utica Police Department.
Police said the department’s Juvenile Aid Unit charged the 15-year-old based on surveillance footage and other evidence gathered during the investigation.
The teenager faces two counts each of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment.
Police did not report any injuries in either shooting or disclose what allegedly led to the gunfire.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, police did not release his identity.
The charges are accusations and have not been proven in court.
