Police say two shooting scenes were tied to a robbery that killed Kevin Walter and left the teen suspect critically wounded
PENN HILLS, PA – A 17-year-old who was initially found critically wounded after gunfire in Penn Hills is now charged with homicide in a robbery that left 18-year-old Kevin Walter shot dead inside a nearby home, according to Allegheny County Police.
The case stems from two shooting scenes discovered during the early morning hours of Aug. 18.
Allegheny County 911 received a report of a shooting victim in the 200 block of Anthon Drive at approximately 2:11 a.m.
While officers were responding, they learned about a second shooting victim inside a residence in the 100 block of Keefer Drive.
Walter was found at the Keefer Drive residence and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the wounded person on Anthon Drive as 17-year-old Tayquawn Mills. He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
The Allegheny County Police Department Homicide Unit began investigating both shootings.
Through witness interviews and evidence collected at the two locations, detectives determined that the incidents were connected and that the shootings occurred during a robbery at the Keefer Drive residence, according to police.
After consultation with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, Mills was charged with multiple offenses, including homicide, robbery, burglary and criminal conspiracy.
Police did not specify in the information released how Walter was shot, who allegedly fired the fatal shot or the circumstances that led to Mills being wounded.
Mills turned himself in to Allegheny County Police on Thursday.
He was transported to the Allegheny County Jail pending preliminary arraignment.
The charges are accusations, and Mills is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
