BAY CITY, TX – The Bay City Police Department is warning residents today of a scammer driving around the community impersonating a gas company employee.  They suspect this person is actually robbing homes.

Here’s the warning issued today by the department:

Detectives wish to warn citizens of subjects going around claiming to be doing surveys for a gas line. Today, January 27, 2021, officers were dispatched to Del Norte subdivision for a call. Upon arrival they met with the victim who provided information for a robbery that had just occurred. The victim arrived home and while in the driveway he was approached by two men wearing work clothes, hard hats, and safety vests. One man was Hispanic and the other was a Black male. The men identified themselves as employees of a company doing surveys for a gas line. After looking for gas lines, they asked to see the victim’s water heater. Once inside the victim’s garage one of the men tried to mace the victim. The victim noticed the other suspect was taking a gun out of a bag. A struggled ensued and the victim began to yell for help. At that time the suspects got in a black 4dr Chevy pickup. At this time this is the best photo available of the suspect vehicle. Anyone who may have information is asked to call the police department at 979-245-8500 and ask for Detective Scott Sherrill or Detective Kim Kunz.
