Murphy keeping New Jersey masked to pander to powerful food workers union

The science of Phil Murphy became clearer this weekend after the governor ignored the CDC recommendation for vaccinated Americans to unmask. Murphy is one of a few governors who continue to defy the CDC health and safety guidelines set forth for vaccinated Americans.

Throughout the pandemic, Murphy’s science did not make much sense to every day New Jerseyans, but this weekend, Murphy shed some light on where he gets his directives from, the powerful unions who are helping his 2021 re-election.

The United Food and Commercial Workers have endorsed Phil Murphy for governor. They endorsed Murphy in 2017 and the union represents 30,000 supermarket workers across New Jersey.

On Saturday, Murphy cited “union science” as his reasoning for keeping millions of fully vaccinated New Jerseyans masked up. Murphy retweeted a post by the UFCW that went against the CDC guidelines. Today, the powerful union thank Murphy for standing behind them, and not the scientists and epidemiologists at the CDC. For standing behind the union and the millions of New Jerseyans who were promised freedom once vaccinated.

This is the latest example of Governor Murphy moving the goalposts…but this time, we know why. So even if you don’t shop in supermarkets and use home delivery, the union wants you to keep your masks on…and so does Phil Murphy.

The UFCW criticized the CDC’s new indoor mask guidance for vaccinated people, saying it will force frontline retail workers in New Jersey and across the country to play “vaccination police” to determine which customers need to follow mask mandates still in place in many regions and businesses. UFCW is calling on states across the country to follow the lead of Gov. Murphy in New Jersey and Governor David Ige in Hawaii and put public health and safety first by maintaining mask mandates and other COVID safety measures.

“New Jersey frontline grocery workers have put their lives on the line daily to make sure families have the food they need during this pandemic. Governor Murphy is showing the leadership New Jersey workers and families need by putting public health and safety first and keeping the state’s mask mandate in place,” the Phil Murphy backed union said. “While vaccinations are helping us slow the spread of COVID, the pandemic is far from over and we cannot let our guard down. As the union for frontline food and retail workers in New Jersey and across the country, UFCW is calling on governors to follow the lead of states like New Jersey and Hawaii that are doing the right thing by keeping these life-saving mask mandates in place as we work to vaccinate the millions of Americans still at risk as this pandemic continues.”
