TRENTON, NJ – Last week, New Jersey Governor Murphy announced there were 31 deaths related to COVID-19 ‘breakout cases’. Breakout cases are cases of COVID-19 in patients who have been fully vaccinated, receiving either the single dose of Johnson and Johnson vaccine or both doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.
Since his announcement last week, the state has reported 17 new deaths among the fully vaccinated. That data is as of July 12th.
The Department of Health today said that more than 50% of those deaths were in patients who had at least one underlying comorbidity. All of those who died were over the age of 50 and 30 were over the age of 80.
Cardiovascular disease was cited as the biggest underlying cause of death in fully vaccinated COVID-19 patients, the state said.
Governor Phil Murphy has said, since January 99% of the COVID-19 cases and deaths however have been among the unvaccinated.
Murphy said that of all the individuals hospitalized or who died due to COVID-19 since mid-January, more than 99% were unvaccinated.
Murphy said of that 1%, many were already at risk of co-morbidity, including one case where the woman was a transplant patient.
“When you add all of this up, you have to conclude that vaccines work,” Murphy said. “The vaccines turn COVID into a preventable disease. Because of the vaccines, this is now a pandemic among the unvaccinated.”
