Paterson couple charged for murder, assault of 17-month old child

PATERSON, NJ – A New Jersey couple has been charged for murder and sexual assault of a young child that led to that child’s death.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces that James Davis, 46 years old, from Paterson, New Jersey has been indicted for Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Sexual Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Qunasia Coleman, 30 years old, from Paterson, New Jersey has been indicted for Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

A Passaic County Grand Jury has returned Indictment No. 21-08-0489-I, charging Mr. Davis with sexual offenses that led to the death of a child that took place in a residence in Paterson on November 7, 2020, when the child was 17 months old.


Mr. Davis was indicted on one count of first degree Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1), one count of first degree Felony Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(3), first degree Aggravated Sexual Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2a(1), and one count of second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child in violation of N,J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(1). Ms. Coleman was indicted on one count of second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(2).

The sentencing exposure on first degree Murder and Felony Murder where the victim is under the age of eighteen is Life Imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison without parole; on first degree Aggravated Sexual Assault where the victim is under the age of thirteen is twenty-five years to life in New Jersey State Prison, subject to a twenty- five year parole disqualifier pursuant to the Jessica Lunsford Act; on second degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child it is five to ten years in New Jersey State Prison.

If convicted, Mr. Davis and Ms. Coleman are subject to Parole Supervision for Life and Megan’s Law registration requirements. Mr. Davis is currently detained pending the disposition of this case. Mr. Davis will be scheduled for arraignment within the next month. Ms. Coleman has been released pending the disposition of this case. Ms. Coleman will be scheduled for arraignment within the next month
