Albany man who tagged BLM mural with “KKK” charged with hate crime

A man who vandalized a Black Lives Matter mural Thursday afternoon on Lark Street has been arrested.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., Albany police officers responded to the Black Lives Matter mural on Lark Street between Hudson Avenue and Lancaster Street for reports of a man vandalizing the mural with graffiti. Upon arrival, officers learned that a man had used white spray paint to write the letters “KKK” and draw burning crosses on the mural. Officer quickly apprehended the suspect on Madison Avenue near Lark Street.

Ian Rawlinson, 43, of Albany, has been charged with Criminal Mischief 4th as a hate crime.


He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in Albany Criminal Court.
