Police investigating shooting at Delaware high school basketball game

Middletown, DE – A gun shot rang out Monday night inside a Appoquinimink High School hallway outside the gymnasium during a basketball game.

Police said the gun was fired accidentally when two groups of individuals were engaged in a fight inside the auditorium. No students were hit and the bellot was lodged ina wall inside the school.

At around 7:16 p.m., Delaware State Police troopers responded to Appoquinimink High School, located at 1080 Bunker Hill Road, Middletown, for a report of a shot fired.


“Two troopers who were working extra duty for a basketball game at the school responded to a hallway outside of the gymnasium where a fight had just occurred,” police reported today. “Further investigation revealed that a handgun fell to the ground during a large fight. The gun was stepped on during the physical altercation causing the gun to discharge and strike a wall. Subsequently, the handgun was recovered in the hallway. There were no injuries as a result of the discharged firearm.”

The suspects involved in the incident fled the scene and ran outside toward the school’s football stadium. Police are still trying to identify the suspects.

No arrests have been made at this time,.
