Planting tomato seeds in New Jersey in April, here’s what you need to know

Lifestyle and Family

Many of us just go and buy tomato plants at the local garden centers in May, but growing your own plants from seeds can be a rewarding experience.

In New Jersey, it is ideal to start your plants indoors before spring comes, but if you want, you can now plant them directly outside.

If you’re planning to plant tomato seeds in New Jersey’s Zone 7, it’s important to keep in mind the unique climate of the region. Generally, tomato seeds should be sown indoors around 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. In Zone 7, the last frost date usually occurs around April 15th, so it’s recommended to start your tomato seeds indoors in late February or early March.

However, if you prefer to plant your tomato seeds directly into the ground, you should wait until the soil temperature reaches around 60°F (15.5°C) before doing so. In Zone 7, this typically happens around mid-to-late April, which is around the same time as the last expected frost date.

Planting your tomato seeds directly into the ground gives them the opportunity to establish strong root systems early on, which can lead to healthier and more productive plants.

Before planting your tomato seeds, make sure that the soil is well-draining and has a pH level between 6.0 and 6.8. Tomatoes also require plenty of sunlight, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

When planting, make sure to space your seeds around 2-3 feet apart, and plant them around 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in the soil. Water them thoroughly after planting, and continue to water them regularly throughout the growing season, ensuring that the soil remains consistently moist.
