Tornado strikes Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A tornado touched down in the area of River Road and N. Great Neck Road on Sunday, at around 5:58 p.m. A state of emergency has been declared for the area. Over 100 homes were damaged.

Heavy rainfall continued through the night. This morning, the community is coming together to assist those in need.

The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado. Several residents in the area reported hearing the sound of the tornado and seeing debris being tossed around by the strong winds.


At 7:42 am, an NWS Survey crew was dispatched to investigate the tornado damage. The NWS will assess damage to determine the classification of the tornado and to determine wind speeds.

The tornado caused extensive damage to several homes and businesses in the area, with roofs torn off, windows shattered, and debris scattered throughout the streets. Several trees were also uprooted, causing damage to cars and power lines.

Virginia Beach officials posted the following bulletin regarding those who want to help: The residents of Virginia Beach have once again shown their overwhelming compassion for their neighbors in a time of crisis. City officials are appreciative of the generous offers of assistance from residents and businesses. We are currently organizing and establishing channels where those who wish to donate can do so. However, at this time, we are asking that the community please not arrive with unsolicited donations. More information will be shared at emergency.vbgov.com as soon as it is available.
