West Orange Police Offering Wheel Locks for Hyundai and Kia Owners

WEST ORANGE, NJ – New Jersey State Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin alerted owners of Hyundais and Kias regarding a recent auto theft trend.

A viral social media challenge has been providing instructions to exploit the anti-theft vulnerabilities of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles, specifically those lacking push-button ignitions.

To address this, Hyundai has initiated the rollout of a complimentary anti-theft software upgrade for the nearly 4 million affected vehicles. The theft technique became widely popular on platforms like TikTok, spreading rapidly. Vehicle owners can check eligibility for the upgrade by visiting the provided website.

The West Orange Police Department, in collaboration with Hyundai, is offering steering wheel locks for residents whose vehicles do not qualify for the software upgrade.

These locks, supplied by Hyundai, can be obtained at West Orange Police Headquarters during working hours. They are also available by appointment at the Groves Police Substation and the Valley Police Substation. Home delivery is also an option.
