East Brunswick Police Remind Drivers of the Law and Back to School Safety

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – The East Brunswick Police Department urges drivers to exercise caution and abide by the law, especially when near school buses and school zones, to ensure the safety of students.

The department stresses the importance of paying attention to driving, particularly in school zones and during times when school buses are frequently in transit. Students are unpredictable, and drivers are advised to maintain a safe distance from school buses at all times.

The department has issued the following reminders for motorists:

  1. On a two-lane highway or any road without a physical divider, stop at least 25 feet away from a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights, regardless of your direction of travel.
  2. On a divided highway, if you are on the same side as a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, stop at least 25 feet away. Remain stopped until all students are either safely on the bus or on the side of the highway and the bus has turned off its flashing red lights.
  3. If you are approaching a stopped school bus from the opposite direction on a divided highway, you may pass at 10 mph or less. Maintain this speed until you are completely past the stopped school bus.
  4. If a school bus is stopped and picking up or dropping off students directly at a school, day camp, or school-related activity and is on the same side of the highway, pass by at no more than 10 mph.
