Yonkers Police Department Emphasizes Back-to-School Driving Safety

YONKERS, NY – The Yonkers Police Department urges drivers to be especially cautious as the new school year begins. Children will be walking to bus stops and schools throughout the city, making attentive driving crucial.

Drivers are reminded to adhere to posted speed limits, especially in school zones, and be prepared to stop for school buses with flashing red lights. New York State law mandates drivers stop for school buses that are picking up or dropping off passengers, whether they encounter the bus:

  • on a public highway
  • on multiple lane roads
  • on opposite sides of divided highways
  • on a public street
  • on a private road
  • in a parking lot
  • on school property

Violations related to school bus safety will be a focus of police enforcement starting today and continuing through the school year. Penalties for passing a stopped school bus are significant and can lead to increased insurance rates.

Tips for sharing the road with school buses include:

  • Anticipate frequent stops and be prepared to stop.
  • Never pass a school bus with flashing red lights, regardless of the side from which you approach.
  • Watch for children crossing the road when a bus is stopped.
  • Be alert for children at bus stops and those running to catch the bus.
  • Be aware that school buses are required to stop at railroad crossings.

If a school bus operator is observed driving unsafely, contact the Yonkers Police Communications Division at 377-7900 and provide the school bus license plate number, bus number, or bus company name.
