RYE, NY – Rye Police Marine Unit responded to a mayday call in Long Island Sound, approximately 2 miles south of Milton Harbor, and successfully rescued a 33-year-old man experiencing a psychiatric emergency.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 12, at about 3:15 p.m. A Good Samaritan initially alerted the United States Coast Guard via radio that a man had fallen overboard from an anchored vessel. The individual in the water refused assistance from the Good Samaritan.

Rye Police arrived promptly and located the man, who was then assisted onto the Rye Police Patrol Vessel. He was subsequently transported to Milton Harbor and handed over to EMS for further evaluation and treatment at a local hospital.

The operation involved coordination with New Rochelle Police Harbor Patrol, Village of Mamaroneck Police Marine Unit, and the Hempstead Bay Constables. The Rye Police Department commended the officers and partner law enforcement agencies for their effective response to a unique situation.
