Bill Seeks to Increase Male Educators of Color Mentorship Fund In New Jersey

Robert Walker

The Senate Education Committee recently gave a favorable report on Senate Bill No. 1660, introducing the “Male Teachers of Color Mentorship Pilot Program.” This three-year initiative, spearheaded by the Commissioner of Education, aims to foster diversity in education through mentorship and support.

The bill mandates the selection of 19 male students of color in their final year of an educator preparation program at selected senior public higher education institutions. These students will be paired with 19 male teachers of color employed in participating school districts, charter schools, or renaissance school projects.

Each student-teacher pair will work closely throughout the student’s final year of study and, if the student secures employment within the participating institution post-graduation, for the first two years of their teaching career. Mentors will receive a $5,000 stipend annually during the program.

Participating institutions are required to conduct performance reviews for the students and make concerted efforts to employ them post-graduation, based on favorable reviews.

Reflecting the program’s expansion and scope, the amended bill now proposes an increased appropriation from the General Fund to the Department of Education, totaling $95,000. The bill, now identical to Assembly Bill No. 3945, has been amended to reflect these changes, including the increase in participant numbers and clarification of mentor employment backgrounds.

The Commissioner of Education will evaluate the program’s effectiveness and report to the Governor and Legislature at the pilot’s conclusion, providing insights and recommendations for its potential continuation and expansion.
