BROWARD COUNTY, FL – An inmate at the Broward County Jail, Kevin Barnes, 35, faces new charges following the fatal beating of his cellmate, Janard Geffrard, 29, on December 16. The incident, reportedly motivated by the victim’s sexual orientation and personal habits, was captured on camera but allegedly received a delayed response from jail deputies.

Marcia Irving, Geffrard’s mother, expressed her shock and confusion regarding the details of her son’s death. In her quest for answers, she questioned the delayed intervention by jail authorities during the incident.

The family’s attorney, Josiah Graham, indicated the possibility of legal action against the county. Graham highlighted the severity of the incident, noting Geffrard was beaten for over 21 minutes without intervention. He emphasized the family’s intention to seek justice and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The family is considering a lawsuit to seek compensation, particularly for Geffrard’s 10-year-old son, in light of the circumstances surrounding Geffrard’s death.

This case has raised concerns about the safety measures and response protocols within the Broward County Jail system. Investigations into the deputies’ actions during the incident are ongoing.
