OAKLAND COUNTY, MI, — Michael Egan, a dedicated science teacher at Larson Middle School in the Troy Public Schools district, has been recognized with an Excellence In Education award by the Michigan Lottery. This accolade is part of a program established in 2014 to honor exceptional public-school educators in Michigan.

Egan, who has a profound curiosity and passion for learning, has made a significant impact through his innovative teaching methods. He involves his students in interactive activities like interpretive nature walks, chemical experiments to evolve different gases, and educational tours of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University. These experiences not only enrich students’ understanding of science but also expose them to advanced research environments.

With a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University and a master’s from Oakland University, Egan has dedicated 17 years to education, spending the last eight at Larson Middle School. The weekly award comes with a $2,000 cash prize, and Egan is now in contention for the Educator of the Year award, which carries a $10,000 cash prize.

Egan’s achievement will be showcased in a news segment airing this evening on the Lottery’s media partner stations, including WXYZ-TV in Detroit, FOX 17 in Grand Rapids, FOX 47 in Lansing, WNEM-TV in Saginaw, and WWTV-TV in Traverse City. This recognition celebrates Egan’s commitment to fostering a love of learning and curiosity in his students, significantly contributing to their educational journey.
