TRENTON, NJ – United Van Lines released its 47th Annual National Movers Study on Jan. 2, revealing a continuing trend of Americans moving eastward and southward, favoring affordability and comparable amenities to larger cities. The study, based on the company’s data on state-to-state migration, showed Vermont leading in inbound moves for the third year, with 65% of relocations being inbound, primarily for family proximity and lifestyle changes.

The study also highlighted a consistent pattern of residents moving out of New Jersey, marking it the sixth consecutive year with a high outbound rate (65%), largely driven by retirement plans. In the Southeast, states like South Carolina (63%), North Carolina (60%), and Alabama (60%) saw an increase in inbound moves, alongside notable rises in Arkansas (60%) and West Virginia (58%).

In contrast, the Midwest and West regions of the U.S. experienced a trend of outbound moves. Illinois (61%), Michigan (58%), California (58%), North Dakota (61%), and Kansas (55%) were among the states with significant outbound traffic in 2023.

Eily Cummings, Vice President of Corporate Communications at United Van Lines, commented on the trend, stating that Americans are opting for more affordable, lower-density areas, particularly in Southern states. She noted that movers are increasingly strategic, considering factors like housing costs, climate, urban planning, and job opportunities in their relocation decisions.
