Annapolis, MD – Today marks the annual Police Plunge event at Sandy Point State Park, where Maryland State Police and various first responders across the state will brave the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The plunge aims to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland, a tradition that has grown in both participation and impact since its inception.

The initiative began in 2012, successfully raising over $100,000 in its first year. Over the years, contributions have surged to over $2 million, demonstrating the community’s strong support for the cause. The event not only highlights the dedication of Maryland’s law enforcement and first responders to supporting local charities but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and public service.

A highlight of the Police Plunge is the presentation of the Jimmy Myrick Jr. Courage Award. Initiated in 2016 by Governor Hogan, the award honors the memory of Jimmy Myrick Jr., a fervent supporter of Special Olympics Maryland. Each year, this award is given to an athlete who exemplifies courage and determination, reinforcing the event’s ethos of resilience and community strength.

Participants and supporters are encouraged to join the tradition and represent their agencies by signing up for the Police Plunge. For those interested in the levels of participation and contributions, a leaderboard displaying totals from the past three years is available, showcasing the collective effort and dedication to this noble cause.
