GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ — Following a substantial bust of a cockfighting operation in Galloway Township, Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy, is urging New Jersey’s Congressional delegation to prioritize the passage of the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking (FIGHT) Act. This legislation aims to tackle the widespread issue of dogfighting and cockfighting across the country.

The Galloway Township Police Department’s recent operation led to 52 arrests and the seizure of $37,000 in cash. Authorities discovered 50 roosters, some in bags, and dogs living in deplorable conditions, shedding light on the cruel nature of animal fighting rings. The home’s owner, Jose Madera, faces multiple charges, including animal cruelty and possession of controlled substances.

The FIGHT Act, introduced by U.S. Senator Cory Booker and co-authored by Senator John Kennedy, along with a House companion bill, seeks to enhance law enforcement capabilities to combat animal fighting effectively. The legislation has garnered significant support, with over 100 cosponsors in the House, including five from New Jersey.

Pacelle emphasizes the critical need for stronger laws and enforcement to prevent animal cruelty, highlighting the FIGHT Act as a top priority for animal welfare organizations. The proposed measures include a private right of action against individuals involved in animal fighting, a ban on online gambling on animal fights, and stricter penalties for those caught shipping fighting animals. With over 450 endorsing organizations, the bill represents a concerted effort to eradicate dogfighting and cockfighting operations.
