Fatal Vehicle Fire Under Investigation in Wicomico County

WICOMICO COUNTY, MD—Deputy State Fire Marshals are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal vehicle fire in Quantico on March 20 at 11:43 AM. Following a neighbor’s report, the West Side and Hebron Volunteer Fire Departments responded to 23071 Nanticoke Road.

Upon arrival, approximately 15 firefighters were met with a 2000 GMC Sonoma pick-up truck ablaze at the rear of the property. The fire was successfully extinguished within 20 minutes; however, human remains were found inside the vehicle. An investigation into the origin and cause of the fire was initiated by Deputy State Fire Marshals, with the Maryland State Police joining to assist in the death investigation.

Despite several hours of scene work and witness interviews, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. The fire resulted in an estimated $5,000 in damages. The recovered human remains have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for identification and determination of the cause of death.
