Retiree hits $30K on scratch-off after grocery run

SEVERN, Md. — A routine grocery trip turned into a life-changing moment for a Severn retiree who claimed the first $30,000 top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s new Diamond Bingo 6th Edition scratch-off game.

The Anne Arundel County man purchased the $3 ticket on a whim as he was leaving the Giant grocery store at 7940 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie. He didn’t scratch it until days later, thinking he had won just $60 — only to find out at a retailer that the prize was far greater.

“When I heard the amount, I was confused,” the winner said after collecting his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on July 9. Though surprised, he said he plans to use the winnings to support his retirement.

The Giant store where the winning ticket was sold will receive a $300 bonus for selling the prize-winning scratch-off.

The Diamond Bingo 6th Edition game launched June 23 and originally featured seven $30,000 top prizes. With this win claimed, six top-tier prizes remain unclaimed, along with thousands of smaller prizes ranging from $3 to $1,000.
