22-year-old charged with first-degree murder in DC shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred in Southeast D.C. on October 23, 2024, leaving one man dead and another critically injured.

The shooting took place at approximately 11:43 a.m. in the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast. Officers from the Sixth District found two men suffering from gunshot wounds upon arrival. Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where 44-year-old Antonio Kojesus Riley, of Southeast D.C., succumbed to his injuries. The second victim remains hospitalized with critical injuries.

Following an investigation, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF) arrested 22-year-old Dawayne Smith, also of Southeast, on December 20, 2024. Smith was apprehended pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant and has been charged with first-degree murder while armed.

The Metropolitan Police Department credits the arrest to the efforts of detectives and regional law enforcement partners. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
