Environmental awareness in 1972 was not as keen as it is today at the Jersey Shore. Officials in New Jersey were squaring off against the EPA who wanted to begin restricting off-shore garbage dumping in a canyon off the coast of Sandy Hook.

The Oakland A’s defeated the Detroit Tigers to secure their spot in the 1972 World Series, 4-1, winning the best of 5 series 3-2.

The winning Pick Six lottery number was 115786. The Pick 3 was 792. The grand prize in the six digit drawing was $50,000.

Two men were charged with assaulting New Jersey ABC agents at Drank’s Rip Tide Bar on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant. The attack took place that June, but charges were filed on October 13, 1972.

Firefighters conducting a drill at the Highlands Grammar School set off a reaction in the community after igniting artificial smoke devices for the training. Residents thought the fire was real because there was no advanced notice. The Board of Education was not made aware. Investigators in Long Branch continued investigating the cause of a fire at Roario’s Men Shop, Frederick-Vincent Cleaners and Eve’s Place two days earlier.

Jail officials in Monmouth County discovered an underground tunnel being dug by inmates to be used as an escape tunnel.

Astronauts aboard Skylab tested the first in-space shower at the soon-to-be doomed space station.

Toms River planners killed a proposal to build a 10-story apartment building at Riverview Point. The 120-unit building was proposed to be built at the corner of Water Street and Hooper Avenue. It would have included 117 one-bedroom apartments and 39 two-bedroom apartments. 50 years ago town leaders knew it was a bad idea to build a 10-story apartment complex, long before the current leaders proposed two of them nearby.
